ABDUL SHUKOR RAMLI, 39
Shukor served his National Service as coordinator, paracounsellor and befriender in the Bedok Police Boys’ Club His work involved organising vocational programmes for youth-at-risk and boys living in the vicinity of the clubhouse. He devoted 17 years in Outward Bound Singapore as a Specialist Instructor before moving on to social work and counseling. He also worked three years at Raffles Institute for Experiential Learning to develop student development programmes for the students. He aims to start a ‘Shelter for Boys’ and devote his life to working with young offenders. Shukor holds a BSocSc in Performance Psychology from Edith Cowan University as well as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counseling. He is currently an associate consultant/trainer to Adventure Safety International and the Raffles Institute for Experiential Learning.

Currently, his attention is occupied by rehabilitative work he is doing for a couple of residential probation institutions for young offenders. This long-term programme engages selected troubled youth in the hope that they will learn to make better choices in their lives, for their future. The programme, called 'Outdoor Breakthrough', incorporates therapeutically-linked and adventure-based activities like camping, outdoor cooking, kayaking and appreciating nature.

He occasionally spends weekends instructing budding kayakers at Sembawang Water Venture Club, and more recently he became involved in 'community drumming'. He has his family hooked, but it's best to ask him what that's all about...

A self-avowed family man, he regularly takes his wife and two young daughters to the family beach house in Malacca, where they go back to their kampong roots while enjoying the fresh sea air. He enjoys cooking over a charcoal fire and his signature dish, Laksa.
